Bis zu 600 Greyhounds in Todesgefahr
In Australien wird erfreulicherweise eine Greyhound-Rennbahn geschlossen. Der Dachverband Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) teilte am 30.04.2009 mit, dass man nach dem 26. Juni keine Rennen mehr auf der Bahn des Wangaratta Racing Clubs abhalten könne. In der Region leben etwa 85 Trainer und bis zu 1.000 Greyhounds. Diese könnten nicht alle auf andere Bahnen umquartiert werden, so der Manager des Clubs, da sonst alle Hunde unter dem Massenandrang leiden, weil nicht alle im Rennbahnbetrieb genutzt werden könnten. Dies wiederum würde ein Training unökonomisch erscheinen lassen:
“If the dogs aren’t getting a run every week, there’s no point training them so they’ll be put into the greyhound adoption scheme. But there’s no way they’ll find new owners for 600 dogs — they’ll have to be put down.”
Grund für die Schließung ist laut dem Vorsitzenden des Dachverbandes, Ian Wilson, mangelnde Förderung der Greyhound-Industrie. Ein geplantes Joint-Venture sei nicht zustande gekommen, andere Finanzierungen seien unwahrscheinlich.
Für die australische Anti-Racing Bewegung ist die Schließung ein großer Schritt. Greyhound Action betont, dass selbst wenn diese 600 Greyhounds eine unsichere Zukunft erwarte, die Entscheidung richtig sei, weil der eingeschlagene Weg auf lange Sicht das Ende der Industrie bedeute – vor allem deshalb, weil die offiziellen Äußerungen (Zitat) den Unwillen der Industrie widerspiegelten, vernünftige Adoptionsprogramme zu etablieren.
Kommentar: Australien scheint weit weg – am anderen Ende der Welt. Doch viel besser sah die Welt auch nicht in England aus, wenn beispielsweise das größte Stadium des Landes geschlossen wird. Walthamstow, London, wurde zum 16.8.2008 geschlossen. Wo die ‘Stow-Hunde geblieben sind, ist bis heute nicht lückenlos aufgeklärt.
